Japan Promotes Health and Education in all regions in Uganda

 

Japan donates over one billion Uganda Shillings to health and education projects in all the regions in Uganda. In the north, a Local NGO Caritas Lira received Ush 152,713,000 to dig 9 boreholes in Lango region. Over 4,300 former IDPs, who have returned to their villages, will get access to safe water. In Adjumani, Alere Secondary School will be given boys dormitory blocks to accommodate over 750 boys who are currently living in a grass-thatched huts. In Dokolo, Awiri Primary School receives classroom blocks, pit latrines and furniture for over 800 students, who are currently studying in an over congested classrooms.

 

In Eastern Uganda, Soroti Municipality Northern Division gets Ush 175,779,100 to demolish and rehabilitate the asbestos roofed classrooms and teacher’s rooms in Pioneer Primary School. Asbestos roofs have been affecting the health of students, teachers and the citizens using the school facilities. In the West, Hapuuyo sub-county gets funding to complete and construct classroom blocks and teacher’s quarters at Hapuuyo and Rwenyange primary schools. Students are currently studying in incomplete or over congested class rooms, while teachers have to travel a long way to school giving them physical and financial difficulties.

Finally in central Uganda, Rakai Community Based Health Project receives over Ush 200 million to construct a maternity ward, equip the operational theatre, the examination room and the dental clinic in Kyotera Medical Centre. Furthermore, a 33Kva generator will be installed to ensure the better service at the centre.

 

The grant contracts were signed between Ambassador Keiichi Kato and each recipient organization on 27th January, 2011 at the Embassy of Japan. He demanded sincere commitment from each recipient organization in completing the projects as planned.

 

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community-based development projects. Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with Africa through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidation of peace and good governance in Africa.
